Space Maintainer
A dental space maintainer is a custom-made metal or acrylic orthodontic appliance used in pediatric dentistry. When a child loses a primary (baby) tooth prematurely due to decay or injury, the neighboring teeth can shift into the empty space. This shifting blocks the permanent tooth from erupting correctly, often leading to severe crowding and expensive future orthodontic treatments. The space maintainer holds the gap open until the permanent tooth naturally emerges. Common types include the band and loop space maintainer for single tooth loss and the distal shoe space maintainer when a primary first molar is lost before the permanent molar erupts. The appliance is custom-fabricated from impressions of the child’s mouth to ensure a precise, comfortable fit.
